Scribd

What they do:

Scribd is a document-sharing site that allows anyone to publish their work on the Web. More than 50 million people a month visit Scribd to read everything from fan fiction to cutting-edge medical research papers. See what your friends are reading and give recommendations to others based on your current favorites. Plus, all of Scribd’s collection can now be read on the web from mobile devices.

Why it’s cool:

Scribd allows writers to upload content–whether it’s an epic poem, the next Da Vinci Code, an in-depth research article, or a steamy tell-all memoir–and gain readers immediately. It’s the future of publishing, and it makes for a much more democratic, open system. Plus, Scribd makes it easy to share your favorite works with your friends–and get recommendations from people who actually know you.
