SUMMARY:NYEdTech Meetup: Here a MOOC. There a MOOC. Everywhere a MOOC MOOC
DESCRIPTION:While there has been a lot of turmoil across the K-20 education space\, little has spread so rapidly as MOOCs (Massively Open Online Courses). Seen as a financial saving grace for some\, and the death of quality education to others\, everyone is picking a side.  We want to talk with the organizations making these courses as well as the universities grappling with the daily changing landscape.  So bring your challenging ideas and let’s roll up our sleeves with some of the industry experts! Currently Confirmed Panelists: * Heather Kane\, Canvas Network by Instructure\, Head of Canvas Network/Dir of Business Development * Sree Sreenivasan\, Columbia University\, Chief Digital Officer * Feng Wang\, City University New York\, Director of John Jay Online Please note this event will also be available on Livestream (Link Here) for those that cannot attend in person.

SUMMARY:NY Open Stats Meetup: Other Uses of R in a Bank
DESCRIPTION:This month we have Vincent Saulys discussing ways to use analytics--with R--at bank besides trading. About the talk: R is a great analytical tool for the front office\, but it can be useful in other areas as well.  In this talk Vincent will share some of the ways he is using R at his firm.  Topics will include error and outlier detection\, social network analysis and using data analysis to improve productivity. Vincent V Saulys Vincent is a Vice President in Technology with over 20 years of financial services experience. Notable past projects include on-line trading systems; a unified web portal for institutional clients; and is credited with a patent (2010) for an on-line debt offering and exchange system. Vincent is currently working to bring analytical techniques and tools to post trade processing and technology.

SUMMARY:NY Hadoop User Group Meetup: Intro to Hive and HCatalog - Calling all Beginners
DESCRIPTION: In our previous well received intro event for beginners\, we had learnt about Map-Reduce. Building further on that foundation\, lets turn our attention to Hive and HCatalog. Hive is a higher-level abstraction on top of MapReduce that allow those without Java programming knowledge to manage and manipulate data in a Hadoop cluster. Hive's data warehouse system for Hadoop facilitates easy data summarization\, ad-hoc queries\, and the analysis of large datasets stored in Hadoop compatible file systems. Hive provides a mechanism to project structure onto this data and query the data using a SQL-like language called HiveQL. At the same time this language also allows traditional map/reduce programmers to plug in their custom mappers and reducers when it is inconvenient or inefficient to express this logic in HiveQL. HCatalog is a set of interfaces that open up access to Hive's metastore for tools inside and outside of the Hadoop grid. This includes: Providing a shared schema and data type mechanism for Hadoop tools Providing a table abstraction so that users need not be concerned with where or how their data is stored. Providing interoperability across data processing tools such as Pig\, Map Reduce\, and Hive. Meet and Greet: 6:30pm Talks kick off at 7pm If you happen to a Hive or HCatalog expert and are interested in presenting at this event\, please send me a message using the email feature on my meetup profile page. http://www.meetup.com/Hadoop-NYC/members/9685377/?a=viewBioRsvpList_showBio
