The Knewton Blog

At Knewton, we like to experiment with data visualizations. The above visualization shows the history of developer contributions to the Knewton Adaptive Learning Platform (Post Git). Contributions are measured in “commits” which occur whenever a developer alters the code and transfers the changes into our central git repository. Each file in a commit is represented by a colored-coded blob which indicates the type of file committed. Each time a developer commits a file, the algorithm… Read more

Our mission at Knewton is to democratize and personalize education for all students. We feel this mission especially keenly when it comes to those students traditionally least likely to receive a high-quality education, whether here in the U.S. or the developing world. Our new partnership with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) is very much in service of this goal. What’s the partnership? Knewton is working with HMH to provide an adaptive learning solution — SkillsTutor Powered by Knewton… Read more

This post was co-written by Kristen Tracey. Scalability vs. Perfection: that’s really the issue at hand any time you need to make a large number of videos. Of course, we want every educational video we make to be perfect — clear, engaging, and without any stumbles. However, the reality of producing lots of videos is that you simply can’t always fix everything. Editing educational videos, like any other web videos, is all about balancing scarce… Read more

Fewer people really talk about the different options for the format of your video — by which I don’t mean the technical file format, but rather the actual style of what will be on the screen. Should you use an… Read more

I’ve been a course developer at Knewton for just over 2 years. Prior to that, I served as a New York Teaching Fellow and completed my Masters in Education at Fordham University, where I wrote my thesis paper on the effects of teachers’ epistemological beliefs on the successful implementation of student-centered teaching practices. A few weeks ago, I decided to share some of my knowledge on the subject of student-centered or “constructivist” teaching with my… Read more
