When I was a just a kid, perhaps some ten years old , way before college was in the forefront of my mind, I had already chosen the University of Chicago as my college of choice. As a special birthday surprise to appease my thrill-seeking side, my mother took me to visit all of the Six Flags Amusements Parks in America. Chicago’s was the best. Ergo, I should attend a college in Chicago, so I haphazardly chose the University of Chicago.  Perhaps I would have just as likely chosen the non-existent Chicago College at the time.

Granted, this isn’t the typical college student’s decision-making route; however, I had grown up in the relatively small town of Gadsden, Alabama, and was desperate to move to a more urban environment.  Chicago was fairly close, and therefore I went as often as I could to visit the city, Six Flags, and later on, the University itself.

Having learned that there was, in fact, such a place as the University of Chicago, I later learned that it had an outstanding academic reputation, and an equally strong mathematics department — my decided major.  This was the nail in the coffin, so to speak, as it consummated my decision to attend.  The only thing left was for me to get accepted.

As fate would have it, I was later accepted into the University of Chicago’s early admissions round.  My hard work in high school and extracurricular activities were some of the best guides to prepare me for what college life would be like.  I think University of Chicago was an excellent choice for me in particular. It was the perfect balance of an urban lifestyle combined with a college town feel, as the University itself is somewhat displaced from downtown Chicago, making it close enough to easily get to, yet far enough away to not have to deal with the stresses of city living.
