The Knewton Blog

Here at Knewton, we’re growing fast. It sometimes seems as though new teams form and change almost every day. Everyone here has awesome, intelligent, useful ideas, and when we start a new project we want to get everyone’s input — without taking too much time out of the day. It’s a hard problem, as anyone who has tried to aggregate opinions from a lot of people can probably appreciate. Our latest solution? With the help of… Read more

Last Friday was Hack Day here at Knewton. In between some hard-core brainstorming and coding, a few Knerds decided to take some time to tackle a pressing office problem. The dilemma: For quite some time now, there have been a bunch of extra Knewton Frisbees lying around the office — more Frisbees than any company (even one with its own recreational Ultimate Frisbee team) could ever use. The solution: A flash-Frisbee distribution in Union Square!… Read more

We’ve spent the last month visiting some of the best engineering schools in the country and talking to some incredibly smart students. At each school, we were blown away by the students’ amazing enthusiasm for working on projects that advance the common good — building health informatics databases in Uganda, designing haptic robotic arms, and much more. We wrapped up our last campus visit of the season at Princeton yesterday. Now, we leave you with… Read more

For the past month, we’ve been traveling to engineering programs around the country to find the best and brightest engineers out there — and bring them back to Knewton. Our next stop is the Harvard Startup Fair on Friday, February 10 from 1:00 – 4:00. Click here for all the event details. Check out this short video we put together featuring three Harvard-educated Knerds, and don’t forget to say hi at the fair!

The trek continues! Next up on our tour of the best engineering schools in the country: Cornell. We’ll be talking Knerd shop at the Startup Fair on Feb. 1, and alum David Siegel will be presenting another great Knerd talk following the event. Join us! Get the event details here.

Over the next few months, we’ll be trekking around the country to visit college engineering programs and recruit a few good Knerds. Our first stop is Carnegie Mellon, which just happens to be the alma mater of two of Knewton’s greatest data scientists. We made a short video about how George and Jesse’s experiences in Pittsburgh helped shape their careers as Knerds. Take a look, and meet George in the flesh at our campus Knerd… Read more

Here at Knewton, we make a lot of videos. Some have instructional content for students, some have information about our products, and some are made just for fun. (And no, you may not see the ignominious footage from our annual holiday party. That video will be released 75 years after all of our deaths.) But just in cased you missed any of our videos, we thought it would be fun to release our five favorite videos from the last year…. Read more

Like any good startup, we’re always looking out for cool ways other businesses, be they big, small, new or established, are putting their public-facing image out on the web. Here are five of my favorite eye-catching company-made videos of 2011… 1. Google Flight Search  Sometimes, a very clear POV explanation of cool new features is more powerful than an over-edited, marketing-ish video. 2. Santa Uses Siri Getting a celebrity to endorse your product never hurts. 3. Meet the Class… Read more

When you work at a tech startup, there are a few basic expectations: 1) big-screen Macs, 2) lots of office snacks, 3) a casual dress code, and 4) the opportunity to make a Coldplay music video with the company COO. Wait… back up a minute. That’s right, on Knewton’s most recent Hack Day, I found myself working with David Liu to produce a music video set to one of his three-year-old son’s favorite songs: Coldplay’s “Paradise.” The whole thing… Read more
