1
Case Study: Business School
We’ll turn the microscope around and examine business school itself. What is business school culture really like? How is the “case method” used and what are its strengths? What will your classmates be like? What is the purpose of study groups and should you join one? Is the first semester as grueling as people say?
2
Optimizing Your Application
Your application is your business case demonstrating why you belong in this school. A good business case is well-researched, well-supported and comprehensive, so your applications had better be, too. We’ll discuss how many and which types of schools to apply to, how much time you should spend on each application, and how to market yourself through a forceful and consistent narrative.
3
Effective Essays
The application essays—expect 8 or 9 per school—are your chance to communicate directly with the admissions department. Your GMAT score and grades speak for themselves; now you state your case in your own words. We’ll discuss how the application narrative comes into play on the essays and how to captivate the admissions gatekeepers.
4
Introduction to Statistics and Probability
Going back to school can be overwhelming, so any jump you can get on your early required classes will be enormously helpful. Statistics and probability are pervasive in business school—and business!—so we’ll give you a framework for what you’ll learn later. These topics take time to sink in, so it’s best to get comfortable with them long before you start your program.
5
Analytical Methods
Business planning can require a solid understanding of decision trees, linear programming, and regression analysis. Whether you are performing the analysis or reviewing the work of others, this discussion will help you understand decision-making amid uncertainty. These complex tools are taught during the first semester and can bewilder even students with strong quantitative skills. Get a head start here.
6
Accounting Fundamentals
Where there is business, there is accounting. Learn the basic terminology so that class discussions don’t leave you behind. You’ll also learn how to build the three main accounting reports: balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. If you’ve never studied accounting before, this primer will prove very helpful when your first semester gets started.
7
Introduction to Spreadsheets and Financial Modeling
Think you’ve mastered Microsoft Excel? The truth is, you probably have nowhere near the spreadsheet skills you’ll need in B-school. Get them here. We’ll go through the basics, then teach you some advanced functions. Finally, we’ll introduce you to financial modeling and teach you to build the classic Wall Street model.
8
Case Study: Time Warner
This is the real deal: An actual case study class taught by Don Collat, former Harvard Business School finance professor. Don was repeatedly voted by students the best professor at HBS, and the case he’s teaching is an all-time classic. Come to class prepared! You may be cold-called. This is an intense experience, just like an actual day in business school.
