Knewton Hack Day: 24 hours to think it, design it, build it, ship it.

Why are we here?

Education is a $7 trillion industry that’s all kinds of broken—and more than ready for disruption.

$7 trillion: that’s 570 times the size of the online advertising market and seven times the global mobile industry. Big Data is interesting anywhere, but no other industry generates the kind (or the quantity) of data as does education. Students generate more data per interaction than any e-commerce or social media user.

What We Do

Traditional education is linear and inflexible. Think print textbooks, fixed syllabi, and one-size-fits-all assessments.

Knewton transforms education into a continuously adaptive experience. The optimal path to mastering a given topic is unique for every student and changes continuously. We find the shortest route for each student, and tell him exactly what to do to get there at any given moment in time.

This goes well beyond adaptive testing. By correlating an individual’s proficiency profile with data from millions of other students, the Knewton platform can predict exactly what to show a student to keep him engaged, remedy a weak spot, or make sure he’s prepared for a particular test date.

We work together to answer questions like:

  • “If you look like this other kind of student we’ve observed before, can we predict what you should see next, and in what form, for what duration, and at what time of day?”
  • “Why did you get this question wrong? Do you not understand the concept, or did you not understand the language?”
  • “Do you need help with this question, or does the real problem lie in the clarity of the explanation you were given?”

Knewton is as good for teachers as it is for students. We make teaching a data-driven experience, arming instructors with detailed student data about time-on-task, proficiency levels, trouble spots, and more.

Knewton recently raised the largest round of edtech financing ever and signed a landmark partnership with Pearson, the world’s largest educational publisher. We are quickly approaching the day when millions of students will receive a constant stream of spot-on Knewton recommendations.

And that’s just the start.

Learning Here

Are you a great software engineer, but want to learn about more data science? Come to our data science brown bags.

Great data scientist, but want to build your own product one day? Take our in-house JavaScript or Python courses.

Hear talks by tech entrepreneurs and investors like Reid Hoffmann, Jeff Wiener, Ron Conway, Peter Thiel, Mitch Kapor, and more.

While you’re developing your skills, you’ll also be helping students succeed in school and starting a revolution to give anyone—regardless of location or socioeconomics—access to the best education resources in the world.

Working Here

Our environment is a modern infrastructure based completely in the cloud. We’re explicitly legacy-free and dogma-free: we use the best languages and technologies suitable for a given task.

We need incredible software engineers, data scientists and others to accomplish our lofty goals.

Benefits include Macs with huge monitors; a kitchen filled with your favorite treats; flexible hours and vacation policy; guest speakers; company-sponsored training and conferences; excellent health benefits; equity; and a chance to do meaningful, cutting-edge work.

We were recognized as one of the top 25 best places to work by Crain’s New York Business.
