Adaptive Testing

We know every trick in the book—because we wrote the book.

Knewton’s exclusive computerized adaptive testing (CAT) algorithm was developed by the same testing scientists who created the tests used by ETS and ACT today. Len Swanson of ETS built the world’s first major adaptive testing engine, which ETS patented. In 2005, ETS lost the GMAT contract to rival testing organization ACT. ACT had Rob McKinley, one of the world’s top psychometricians, create a new algorithm, which ACT then patented. Between them, Len and Rob have created the only two major adaptive testing algorithms in the world. Now Len and Rob both work for Knewton.

Len Swanson, one of the principal developers of Knewton’s test prep programs, is widely considered the father of computerized adaptive testing. He served as executive director of technology for ETS and developed the computerized versions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and the Praxis Assessment Series for teacher licensure. He holds more patents in adaptive testing than anyone else who has ever lived.

Robert McKinley is one of the nation’s leading experts in the fields of psychometrics and computer-based testing. He was a senior statistician and advisor at ETS and director of computer-based testing at ACT, where he developed the GMAT that is used today. McKinley was also one of the major figures behind the LSAT; he directed research for the Law School Admissions Services and coordinated all LSAT statistical analysis.

For GMAT and GRE test-takers, all Knewton practice questions are adaptive, so you will become totally used to answering questions in that format.

* Adaptive testing is currently used on the GMAT and GRE; you get one question at a time and each subsequent question adapts to your performance depending on how you answered previous questions.
