The Knewton Blog

For the past month, we’ve been traveling to engineering programs around the country to find the best and brightest engineers out there — and bring them back to Knewton. Our next stop is the Harvard Startup Fair on Friday, February 10 from 1:00 – 4:00. Click here for all the event details. Check out this short video we put together featuring three Harvard-educated Knerds, and don’t forget to say hi at the fair!

The FAS Office of Career Services and the Harvard Innovation Lab invite you to join us at the 2nd Annual Start-Up Career Fair on Friday, February 10, 2012.

Some of our very own Harvard-graduated software engineers will be holding court at the Knerd table. Stop by to say hello and learn about what we’re working on.

Over the next few months, we’ll be trekking around the country to visit college engineering programs and recruit a few good Knerds. Our first stop is Carnegie Mellon, which just happens to be the alma mater of two of Knewton’s greatest data scientists. We made a short video about how George and Jesse’s experiences in Pittsburgh helped shape their careers as Knerds. Take a look, and meet George in the flesh at our campus Knerd… Read more

Somehow, 2011 is almost over. It was a good year for us: we celebrated our 3rd birthday, closed another round of funding, and partnered with Pearson. We’ve grown a lot too: with almost 80 people on deck, computers and people are squeezed into every spare corner of the office, and the office kitchen cycles through who knows how many  pallets of Chobani yogurts and bags of SunChips each week. In the spirit of reflection, here are twelve of… Read more

Aaron Tobias Aaron Tobias, one of our awesome summer interns, has been hard at work for the past few months. “As an intern on the product team, I’m expected to gain a full understanding of the products I’m working on and the users for whom those products are created,” says Aaron. “I’m a major advocate for the user in the product development process, while simultaneously understanding and balancing the needs of international and external stakeholders.”… Read more

Here at Knewton, we have a lot of skills. Dressing up isn’t one of them.* If you’ve ever been to our office in Union Square (check out this video if you haven’t), you’ve probably noticed our tendency to dress for comfort over style. In other words: sweatshirts, t-shirts, and, yes, even bare feet. (We do shower, though, we promise). Which is why all our team members were so excited when we opened up the brand-new… Read more

The hard drive on my work laptop failed to boot last week after encountering a bunch of corrupted files. After trying all the options for fixing it myself—solutions like “reset the PRAM”—I took it to our system administrator and asked him to completely wipe the hard drive rather than try to fix the files and risk dragging out a repair. Sound like a disaster? Actually, it wasn’t so bad — thanks to a few key… Read more

In our “KnerdCast” series, we meet with entrepreneurs in NYC who are doing awesome things with technology. This week: a company that’s using powerful new hardware to keep older computers running and relevant. Check out the video wrap-up we made using Prezi; full interview text is below. Meet Jonathan Hefter. He’s the 25-year-old founder and CEO of Neverware. Never heard of him? Neither had anyone else for the year he was living in his parents’… Read more

We’ve got some pretty crafty people here at Knewton. Last craft night, among other projects, Abby (one of our designers) led the troops in some old-fashioned headband making. This week, there were a few different projects going on: origami, cross-stitching, and some pretty hard-core bobby-pin assemblage. Ashley Delose (aka “Delose” — can you tell she was the second Ashley on the scene?) led the bobby pin effort. Delose, a front-end developer on the tech team,… Read more
