What is the SAT?

The SAT is a standardized test used by colleges to measure students' knowledge and skills. Almost all colleges use the SAT to help make admissions decisions. The test has three sections: Critical Reading, Writing, and Math. To learn more about how to prepare for the test, our SAT Study Guide is a great place to start.

  1. 1 SAT Writing Section

The Writing Section of the SAT consists of multiple-choice grammar questions and a 25-minute essay. To get your top scores, you'll need to write stellar SAT essays and master the question types you'll see across the writing section. Learn more about Improving Sentences, Identifying Sentence Errors, and Improving Paragraphs questions. Our SAT Writing Guide will help get you started.

  2. 2 SAT Reading Section

The Critical Reading section of the SAT has two types of questions: Sentence Completion and Reading Comprehension (also known as Passage-Based Reading). Wondering how to approach SAT passages? Knewton's SAT Reading Guide will show you how to read more effectively—without slowing you down.

  3. 3 SAT Math Section

The SAT Math section tests skills from the first few years of high school: geometry, basic algebra—and your ability to navigate word problems! To see what you need to know, check out our SAT Math Guide. You'll learn more about the multiple-choice and student-produced response questions you'll see on exam day.
