Performance-Based Assessment

Posted in Ed Tech 101 on January 10, 2014 by

What is “performance-based assessment”?

Performance-based assessment is an alternative to traditional standardized testing methods. Rather than testing students’ responses to a set number of multiple choice questions, performance-based assessments attempt to use alternative methods which more broadly and effectively represent student learning and progress through course material.

Some examples of performance-based assessment methods include:

  • Oral defenses

  • Written responses

  • Portfolio reviews

  • Individual or group projects

  • Performances

  • Journals

What are your thoughts about performance-based assessment? Have you heard this term before? In what context?
