SXSWedu! Sessions We’re Excited About: Teaching and Content

Posted in Teacher Tools on March 5, 2012 by

Regardless of the technologies used to consume it, there is no substitute for quality content. We’re fascinated by how the role of teachers is evolving and how content curation plays into that evolution, as well as what that means for student engagement and learning outcomes. Here are four content-centric sessions we’re excited to attend at SXSWedu this week.

Education in a World of Social and Technological Change
March 6, 10:15 – 11:15 AM

Though the cost of acquisition has lowered as technology has become more mainstream, the digital divide is still a pressing issue in today’s schools and communities. This session is led by S. Craig Watkins, an expert in young people’s social and digital media behaviors and an instructor in the Radio-Television-Film department at the University of Texas-Austin. We’re looking forward to hearing about his hands-on experiences working to better understand what he refers to as the “digital edge” present in America today.

Innovative Courses and Content for Student Engagement and Success
March 7, 2:00 – 3:00 PM

We’re always interested in hearing about innovative online courses and learning opportunities. This session, led by Felice Nudelman, the executive director of education for the New York Times Company, will detail how the company, along with university collaborators, is using technology to engage students and explore issues of current events, journalism, and ethics.

Are we there yet? Integrating Tech & Learning
March 7, 9:00 – 10:00 AM

We’re as eager as the leaders of this panel (Geoff Wurzel, executive director of TechNet’s Texas and Southern US Regional Node, and Johnny Veselka, executive director of the Texas Association of School Administrators) to see how the education revolution will unfold. This session’s discussion of the long-term road map for education’s global accessibility and personalization is one we won’t miss.

21st Century Learning in the K-12 Environment
March 8, 9:00 – 10:00 AM

Nelson Coulter is a veritable master of all trades (or at least a few) – his litany of held positions include rancher, teacher, musician, consultant, superintendent, and several more. We’re hugely excited to hear him share some of what he’s learned in successfully fostering a culture of learning throughout an entire Texas school district.
