SINGAPORE, 14 October 2015 – Marshall Cavendish Education, the leading textbook publisher and Learning Management System (LMS) provider in Singapore, has signed a partnership agreement with leading U.S. adaptive learning technology company Knewton to develop a personalized adaptive Mathematics solution to enable more effective independent learning for students in Singapore. Supported by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the pilot project will begin in 2016 with interested schools.
The development of this solution is in line with the Infocomm Media 2025 plan launched in August 2015. One of the strategic thrusts of the masterplan is connecting people through infocomm media, including deploying technologies in a people-centric manner to improve various aspects of life such as education. This solution aims to transform students’ experience with learning solutions by recognizing the different abilities of students and their diverse levels of understanding of mathematical concepts. It will keep students attentive and interested by automatically adjusting content to suit each student’s ability. The solution will also automatically recommend the pieces of content a student should work on, even recommending content across grade levels to ensure that students get the advanced or remedial content they need at precisely the moment they need it.
Promoting deeper understanding of Mathematics concepts
This personalization of content and learning pathways will encourage students to become more confident learners and will help promote a deeper understanding of Mathematics concepts. This solution will improve learning outcomes and provide students with a more customized learning experience for Mathematics. Additional levels and subjects will be launched later.
The product will be powered by Knewton’s cutting-edge adaptive learning engine used by nearly 10 million students through its partnerships with 25 of the world’s leading learning companies in 20 countries. Knewton has served more than 15 billion recommended activities to students through these partnerships to date.
A first-of-its-kind Adaptive Mathematics Learning Solution
Through technology, this first-of-its-kind solution in Singapore will empower educators to better support learning for every student in every Mathematics class they teach and more easily differentiate instruction. A detailed dashboard will provide teachers with insights on how students are learning and where students need further support, allowing teachers to prioritize their limited time.
“We understand that one of the biggest challenges teachers face today is being able to address the diverse needs of every student with differentiated instruction and resources. In today’s increasingly digital world, it is important to empower teachers with tools that complement and deliver quality content, tailored to each student’s needs,” said Ms Lee Fei Chen, Head of Publishing Group, Times Publishing Limited. She added, “With Singapore’s consistent top performance in international studies such as Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), this partnership aims to give students access to personalized learning with next-generation solutions that will help them learn more effectively and efficiently so they continue to excel.”
“Singapore’s curricula and public school system are among the most highly respected in the world,” said Mr Jose Ferreira, founder and CEO of Knewton. “Singapore is forward-looking in its adoption of cutting-edge technologies for education and we look forward to bringing personalized learning to more students.”
